GPS - The price for free traffic information (Consumer Reports, Oct 6): "On the new Garmin units with lifetime traffic, text-based advertisements can appear onscreen when the vehicle is stopped for 10 seconds, or if the user taps on an icon at the bottom of the screen on the traffic page." An interview with TrafficCast's Nick Kiernan (CNET, Oct 8): "TrafficCast was established in 2002, emerging out of a successful traffic and transportation consulting business, TranSmart Technologies, which was founded by Dr. Connie Li and Dr. Bin Ran. MIT Researchers Try To Crack Already Solved Problem of Predicting Commute Times (Wired, Oct 9): "Researchers at MIT are working on project that will collect real-time traffic and other road conditions from drivers and share it across a network in a bid to potentially reduce commute times." BART Riders Embrace Paying with Mobile Phones -- NFC Trial a Success (Market Watch, Oct 6): "The results show that BART riders who took part in the trial extensively used their contactless, Near Field Communication (NFC) enabled phones to pay for their BART fares and meals at participating Jack in the Box restaurants." Another RFID smart card vulnerability exposed (Christian Science Monitor, Oct 8): "Just two months after a judge barred a group of MIT students from disclosing vulnerabilities discovered in Boston's CharlieCard fare collection system, another group, this time from the Netherlands, has published instructions for cracking the cryptographic cypher used to secure the world's most popular transit system smart card."
