3) TRANSPORT FOR LONDON TEST DRIVES TECHNOLOGY

"Transport for London (TfL) is to spend up to £30m examining new technologies to improve road services and cut congestion in the capital. Over the next four years TfL will consider radio frequency identification (RFID) and satellite navigation to support the congestion charge and road pricing plans, advanced enforcement cameras and new traffic management systems."

4) STRATEGIC ANALYSIS OF ADVANCED TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS IN WESTERN EUROPE

"Advanced traffic management systems (ATMS) are receiving considerable attention across Western Europe, particularly given surging traffic congestion and pollution levels. 5) IT'S TIME TO DRIVE IN THE FAST LANE

6) PANYNJ TO STUDY ALL-ELECTRONIC TOLLING

"Some of the busiest toll facilities in America could go cashless if a study and design effort is positive. The Port Authority New York New Jersey (PANYNJ) has embarked on a two year $9m 'study and preliminary design' for all-electronic toll collection. This would mean the elimination of existing toll plazas and their replacement by overhead gantries bearing transponder readers and license plate imaging cameras."

7) VODAFONE TEAMS UP WITH TOMTOM TO BUST TRAFFIC JAMS

"Dutch satellite navigation company TomTom has developed a traffic information system alongside telecoms group Vodafone to help drivers avoid traffic jams. The agreement will see TomTom's in-house technology use information from the Vodafone's network in the UK to provide information on the speed and direction of cars travelling on all major roads across the UK."

8) WIRELESS NOTIFICATION SYSTEM BEING TESTED IN FIVE COUNTIES

"A wireless program meant to give railroad employees instant weather information and railcar information will have a trial run in Travis, Williamson, Bastrop, Burnet and Llano counties over the next four months. The program, Operation Respond Emergency Information System Mobile and AccuWeather.com Wireless, will be delivered on a Blackberry platform by the Austin Area Terminal Railroad, Texas emergency responders and emergency managers."

9) NEW YORK PITCHES 'CONGESTION PRICING' TO FEDERAL OFFICIALS

"Federal transportation officials studying New York City's plan to charge drivers who enter the most congested parts of Manhattan on weekdays heard new financial details about the proposal during a meeting yesterday in Washington. State and city transportation officials said they 'came out feeling good' after making the formal presentation to officials from the United States Department of Transportation."

10) SMART CARS COMMUNICATE WITH ROAD

"Imagine your car telling you that an ambulance was heading toward the intersection you were about to enter, long before the siren was even audible. Or instead of allowing you to inadvertently run through a red light and hit an oncoming car, it sent a signal for the light on both sides to stay red, allowing you to pass safely. It's called Vehicle Infrastructure Integration and consists of roadside radio transmitters capable of communicating information to drivers and traffic signals."
