Project aimed at avoiding traffic (USA Today, Jun 13): "On July 1, the I-95 Corridor Coalition and Inrix Inc., will begin providing real-time traffic information on 2,500 miles of highway between New Jersey and North Carolina, including 1,500 miles of I-95." Read more

COMMUNICATIONS

$700 million deal will combine Hughes Telematics with Polaris (Atlanta Business Chronicle, Jun 16): "Automotive telecommunications firm Hughes Telematics Inc. is merging with Polaris Acquisition Corp. in a $700 million stock swap deal." Read more

ELECTRONIC TOLL COLLECTION

Locals could go toll-free on I-80 (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Jun 15): "If the federal government approves converting Interstate 80 to a toll road, many local drivers could end up paying nothing at all because toll barriers, on average, would be spaced more than 30 miles apart and may be up to 50 miles apart." $500m system to boost freight rail (Australian IT, Jun 17): "THE Australian Rail Track Corporation hopes to double capacity on its national freight network by switching to a $500 million computerised management system that allows trains to run safely at shorter intervals." Read more

Cybit signs Ford telematics deal (BusinessCar, Jun 18): "Telematics firm Cybit has signed a deal to supply Ford with a telematics system for its fleet customers." Read more

Apisphere and TrafficCast Join to Develop Mobile Navigation Solution (TMC net, Jun 18): "Apisphere, a company that offers location-awareness services for mobile industry applications, recently announced its partnership with TrafficCast International, a provider of digital traffic data." Read more

Experimental Phone Network Uses Virtual Sticky Notes (Science Daily, Jun 19): "The rapid convergence of social networks, mobile phones and global positioning technology has given Duke University engineers the ability to create something they call 'virtual sticky notes', site-specific messages that people can leave for others to pick up on their mobile phones." PARKING SYSTEMS

Machine solves parking problem (St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Jun 13): "Set to be completed in late 2009, the Alexa building will have an automated parking garage. Popular in Europe and Asia, these robotic garages recently have been built in congested U.S. cities on both U.S. coasts." Read more

SANDAG launches real-time traffic video on cable TV (Ramona Sentinel, Jun 18): "San Diego region’s real-time traffic information service has expanded into television, making traffic conditions and live freeway video available on cable TV." Read more

XM NavTraffic Real-Time Traffic Service to Be Available on All 2009 Porsche Cayenne Models (Stockhouse, Jun 19): "XM, the nation's leading provider of satellite radio, today announced that its award-winning XM NavTraffic service will be available as a factory-installed feature on the new 2009 Porsche Cayenne." Canada-India RFID project looks to improve traffic flow, reduce pollution (EurekAlert, Jun 19): "RFID technology may provide the key to better traffic management and improved pollution control in Canada, India and worldwide." Read more

TRANSIT ITS

Smart cards will take time (British Columbia Local News, Jun 19): "A smart card transit fare payment system and electronic gates for SkyTrain may not come as fast as transportation minister Kevin Falcon hopes." Read more
