Georgia's 5-1-1 system ready for summer road travel, traffic (Atlanta Business Chronicle, May 22): "As Memorial Day weekend nears, the Georgia Department of Transportation is reminding summer travelers to call Georgia 5-1-1 for free traffic, travel and tourism information 24 hours a day every day." Like Herding Cars: NYSDOT Explores Cutting-Edge Lane Management (Tri-State Transportation Campaign, May 20): "NYSDOT broadly defines 'managed use' lanes as including any operational or design feature that increases roadway efficiency. This definition encompasses familiar measures like carpool lanes, busways, ramp metering, reversible lanes, and variable tolling. It also includes rarer tools like truck-only toll lanes, bus-on-shoulder programs, and so on." Read more
VEHICLE-TO-VEHICLE AND VEHICLE-TO-INFRASTRUCTURE
When cars surf the internet, dot.car will be the place to go (EETimes, May 21): "Telematics service provider ATX Group (Dallas, Texas and Duesseldorf, Germany) has launched an initiative to connect embedded and nomadic devices in vehicles to the internet. To this end, ATX has jointly with the Connected Vehicle Trade Association (CVTA) proposed to convene an international working group." Read more
Can mobile technology help save the planet? (Smart Planet, May 22): "On the face of it, machine-to-machine (M2M) mobile technology seems like an unlikely candidate to help save the planet. But M2M's advocates say that it can play an important part in cutting carbon emissions by making company logistics more efficient and even cutting out business journeys altogether." Read more
