Hi-tech plan to end traffic woes (Gulf Daily News, Apr 15): "BAHRAIN yesterday unveiled a master plan that is expected to revolutionise the country's transport system within five years. The multi-million dinar Integrated Transport System (ITS) hopes to use the latest technology to help reduce congestion and improve road safety." Read more
China's Tsinghua Univ. to cooperate with Siemens in technology (China View, Apr 15): "Tsinghua University signed a five-year contract here on Tuesday with the German multinational Siemens to establish a technology exchange center." Read more

Orbital Sciences Sells Transportation Unit (Washington Post, Apr 17): "Orbital Sciences, a space technology manufacturer in Dulles, announced yesterday that it agreed to sell its transportation management division [to ACS] for $42.5 million in cash." Read more

E-ZPass expanding to Mon-Fay Expressway (Pittsburgh Post Gazette, Apr 12): "The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission will expand E-ZPass electronic toll collection to two mainline toll barriers on the Mon-Fayette Expressway starting Monday." Read more

Study: Truck-only lanes won't relieve Atlanta traffic (Atlanta Business Chronicle, Apr 16): "A Georgia Department of Transportation study has thrown water on a proposal to ease traffic congestion on metro Atlanta's interstate highways by restricting some lanes to trucks." Read more

DOT requests ideas to link intelligent vehicles, highways (Land Line Magazine, Apr 15): "The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Research and Innovative Technology Administration has formally requested ideas for its plans to deploy and link traffic information and navigational systems with individual vehicles’ crash avoidance systems." Using Geographic Information To Aid Patient Care (EMS Responder, Apr 16): "A prehospital crew working on a shooting victim radios the control facility for an available trauma center. Looking at a map of available centers, the mobile intensive care nurse at the control facility sees the crew is only a few miles from the nearest one. But what if they can't get there?" Read more

Traffic Cameras Up For Final Vote (Tamap Bay Online, Apr 17): "Last month, the Brooksville City Council gave a tentative blessing to install traffic cameras at city intersections to catch red-light runners in the act. But at least three of the five council members said they wanted more information before they gave their final approval." Read more
TRANSIT ITS
Now, track your bus online (Sify, Apr 11): "We are familiar with the integrated voice response system (IVRS) for airlines and railways that tells us about arrival and departure timings of flights and trains in a monotonous voice. How about one for buses that gives you instant information on arrival and departure timings, the routes, and the transit points at which they are currently present etc, that too via internet or SMS?" Amtran picks vendor for high-tech upgrade (Altoona Mirror, Apr 17): "Amtran accepted a proposal Wednesday from Avail Technologies of State College to install more than $1 million worth of high-tech improvements on 20 buses." Read more
