Mega cities set to have intelligent transport cells (Business Standard, Apr 5): "Pushing for induction of IT-driven solutions in traffic management, the Research Committee on Applications of Industrial Electronics of the Union Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MOCIT) has suggested setting up of intelligent transport management cells to help mega cities across the country tide over their traffic woes." Stretch of I-95 to get better alert system (Palm Beach Post, Apr 8): "Big overhead message signs that warn drivers about traffic delays and shutdowns will be coming to Interstate 95 in Palm Beach County in about two years." Read more

3M teams with Sirit (RFID News, Apr 7): "The 3M Corporation has entered into a cooperative marketing agreement with RFID tech company Sirit." Read more
Convenience stores offer new services for motorists using onboard units (The China Post, Apr 8): "Motorists wishing to use the electronic toll collection (ETC) system on the freeway networks now can go to the 7-Eleven convenience stores to complete the procedures of filing applications for the installation of the on-board units (OBUs), purchasing ETC cards, and checking the balance of payments." Safety key concern as Beijing prepares for Olympic Games (Cargonews Asia, Apr 7): "Analysts estimate logistics during the Games period will cost US$6.17 billion - $5.95 for direct expenses related to moving equipment, $69.83 million for indirect expenses, such as food and tourism, and $15.39 million for disposable products." Painting for toll lane this weekend on Route 167 (Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Apr 9): "Crews on that day will paint a new set of double white lines at the edge of the car pool lane to mark a high-occupancy toll, or HOT, lane that will be open for a fee to single drivers starting April 26." Studies examine how plug-in hybrids will affect power grid (Power Electronics Technology, Apr 9): "As plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) move toward commercialization, utilities, research institutions, and other organizations, are attempting to analyze the possible impact that these new, high-power loads could have on the electric grid in the future." Satellite navigation receives £113K in research funding (eGov monitor, Apr 4): A pioneering navigation device which can tune into different satellite networks around the world is being developed by researchers at De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) in partnership with a Nottingham company." Cell phone GPS faces challenges (Sci-Tech Today, Apr 8): "Nokia is investing heavily to make mobile global positioning satellite technology a success. Its $8.1 billion purchase last October of Navteq, a U.S. digital map maker, is under review by the European Commission, which expressed concerns that Navteq would allow Nokia to dominate the digital navigation market in Europe." Microsoft introduces "Clearflow" live traffic routing service (Switched by engadget, Apr 10): "Microsoft has announced a new tool for drivers to avoid traffic jams. The service, called "Clearflow", calculates how tie-ups affect backups on local city streets which could mean more accurate rerouting along busy routes." Read more
Kansas City's KSHB-TV Launches Free Mobile Traffic Camera Service to Help Lighten Traffic Load (Earth Times, Apr 10): "KSHB-TV Channel 41, the NBC-affiliate station based in Kansas City, Missouri, has launched a free mobile traffic camera service for area residents and commuters." Read more

Beijing Olympics Keeps Traffic Moving with Stratus ftServer Systems (PR Newswire, Apr 10): "The challenges of transporting three million Beijing Olympic athletes, media and spectators efficiently to more than 300 sporting events and 1,000 cultural activities will be eased by a technologically sophisticated underground traffic system." White lights might help nab drivers who run the red ones (Minneapolis Start Tribune, Apr 10): "A new technology that keeps police officers from having to chase vehicles through intersections is considered as an option." Read more
More red light cameras for city intersections? (Inside Toronto, Apr 10): "Red light cameras will be coming to intersections across the city and if Queen's Park co-operates, it will cost drivers who run red lights significantly more in cash and demerit points." Read more

Transport for London’s iBus wins innovation award (TfL, Apr 7): "The Intelligent Transport Society (ITS) for the United Kingdom has presented London Buses with the 2007/08 Annual Award for Excellence for its iBus system." Read more
