ITS REPORT Issue 1

May 5 - May 21, 2007

Dear Reader:

We hope you enjoy this most recent edition of ITS Report.

1) IT'S HARD TO CRASH WITH THIS

"I've seen a glimpse of a future when vehicles do much more to keep drivers safe and commutes smooth. You'll be hearing more about Vehicle Infrastructure Integration, or VII for short. It's all about wireless and satellite technologies enabling automobiles to send and receive information to other vehicles and roadside communication devices, with the ultimate goal of using all that communication to make driving safer and more efficient." Detroit Free Press, May 21, 2007. Read more

2) TOLL ROADS TAKE A TOLL ON VIRGINIA

"Virginia's transportation crisis led many lawmakers to seek creative ways to pay for roads without directly asking taxpayers for the money. One popular solution with the anti-government crowd is allowing the private sector to operate state highways as toll roads. Such public-private deals, however, usually do not serve the public interest."

3) FROZEN GAS TAX LEADS TO TOLL ROADS

"A cash crunch is fast approaching for the government trust fund that pays to build and repair highways and bridges. The federal tax on a gallon of gas has not risen in 14 years and Congress is reluctant to increase it. People are demanding more fuel-efficient vehicles _ less gasoline used, fewer dollars for the fund. States already are looking for other places for road-building money _ toll road and consumption-based sales taxes, for example."

6) FEELING CAMERA SHY

"As the idea of red-light cameras arises in Nassau County, the devices have made New York City streets safer, some say, but in other parts of the country they have been challenged as unconstitutional and invasive. More than 2.6 million summonses have been issued in New York City through 2005 since the program's inception in 1993. One hundred cameras now monitor city intersections."
